The early 1990s witnessed a major discovery of rubies near Mong Hsu, northeast of the regional capital of Taunggyi, in Shan State. Today, rubies originating from Mong Hsu comprise over 95% of faceted rubies entering the world market and are known for their intense red cores.

Phar Kant, in northern Myanmar, has long been hallowed for its vast jade mines, which produce the world's finest quality jadeite.
